Best Inline and Roller Skates for Young Children (2-4 year olds) 2017

Lots of children go to the local skating rink and simply rent skates. This is great for the experience and for growing into the activity of skating. For children that do skate at an early age there are many advantages in terms of developing muscles and balance. At ages 2-4 there are a few recommendations for purchase of young children’s skates. The roller skates for these young children are usually plastic quad skates, with adjustable fittings, and knee pads.

Price

Most toddler skates are affordable. The majority of them are from name brands such as Disney and Fischer-Price. These will run between $15-40 and be adjustable so should last long enough for children to learn the basics. Usually, the skates come with some safety gear, typically knee pads.

Safety First: What Are the Safest Skates for Kids?

Like with any activity and sport, children’s safety is our highest priority. Once you’ve decided on a pair of skates it is essential to purchase the basic safety gear that children should be wearing while skating. The four most common protective gear are a helmet, elbow pads, knee pads, and wrist guards/pads. The combination of the outline protective gear should cover your child in most cases.

Questions to ask during the buying process:

  • What size should I order?
  • How difficult is for beginners to learn?
  • What age should my child start learning to skate?
  • Is any protective gear included with the skates?
  • Are these quad skates or inline skates?
  • Where are the brakes/stoppers?
  • Can my child wear shoes with these skates?
  • Are these skates for indoor or outdoor use? What sizes should I order?
  • Where can I get replacement parts?

The Fisher-Price Grow-with-Me 1,2,3 Roller skates were designed for youth beginners. There are 3 stages that are outlined when using these skates. Stage 1 is for beginners that will “skate-walk” meaning the wheels don’t roll. As confidence gets built and the child’s balance increases Stage 2 begins. A quick adjustment to the wheels allows for movement forward where the wheels are able to roll one way, forward, but not backward. Then at stage 3, another adjustment brings the wheels free to move both forward and backward. This has been a great product for teaching children how to skate. For growing children these are ideal as they adjust from 6-12 child shoe size.
